Why use an Eco-Label

The Nordic Eco-label’s mission is to contribute to reducing the consumer burden on the environment. Using eco-labeling, we want to guide consumers and purchasers in their desire to shop with a "green" conscience, and thus contribute to a better society. Through eco-labeling, we want to encourage manufacturers to develop environmentally-friendly products and services.

Climate change and environmental pollution caused by human activity leads to a feeling of despair among many people. That is the bad news. The good news is that it “IS” possible to contribute to a more climate-friendly future. Buying eco-labeled products is one of the ways to make private consumption more sustainable – and make a more climate-friendly choice.

The Nordic Eco-label is a voluntary scheme for businesses. More and more companies are recognizing that environmentally responsible manufacturing and production are an integral part of their mission and the value they want to deliver to their customers. Eco-labels send a clear message: we care about improving the health and general welfare of mankind and the planet. The label evaluates a product’s impact on the environment throughout the whole lifecycle. The scheme ensures independent control and that strict ecological and performance criteria are fulfilled. The label guarantees that climate and environmental requirements are taken into account, and that CO2 emissions (and other harmful gasses) are limited – where it is most relevant. Some products have greater impact on climate and environment change than others. For these products only “the best in class” can be awarded an eco-label; e.g. products like lap tops, washing machines and other electric and electronic appliances. All of these product groups must meet tough requirements for energy consumption.

You can feel confident that “the bad guys” have been sorted out. The Nordic Eco-label includes climate and environment protection and ensures:

  • Strict environmental requirements
  • Consideration for the health of you and your children
  • Equal or superior quality of the eco-labeled product compared to similar products

The Nordic Eco-label is addressing important environmental issues:

  • Energy/climate
  • Raw Materials
  • Harmful chemicals
  • Hazardous effluents
  • Waste
  • Packaging
  • Instructions for use
  • Government requirements

The Nordic Swan Eco-label and the European Union’s Flower Eco-label are your guarantee when it comes to chemicals and health. With eco-labeling, you can feel safe about “what’s in” the products you buy. For example, all baby care products are perfume-free; thus there is absolutely minimal risk for allergies. When you buy products with an eco-label, you help protect the world’s rivers, lakes, oceans, and forests. This is because eco-labeled detergents and cleaning agents, for instance, contain only chemicals that are easily biodegradable in the aquatic environment. In addition, factories producing eco-labeled goods are obliged to conserve energy, thereby reducing CO2 pollution.

Lastly, you can purchase eco-labeled products with confidence. The Eco-label requires that labeled products must be at least as good as – or better than – products without the labels. Goods should also cost about the same as other products. There are almost 3000 products carrying the Flower or the Swan eco-label. The larger number of people buying eco-labeled products, the more companies will wish to obtain the labels. The more products on the shelves or on websites like Bambo-Nature.com, the higher the sales – and the greater the environmental benefit.
